Florida Fly Fishing

Hey anglers,

I am back my Florida trip.  The fishing was pretty awesome down there.  I def am not a great saltwater water angler.  I did have a ton of fun out there and def will be doing more saltwater fly fishing in the future.

I did manage to hook into lots and lots of nice fish.  Landing them was another story......  I started off using 2x tippet in search for bonefish.  No luck here.  I spent a total of 4 hours searching the flats for bonefish but didn't even see one.

I did hook into a lot of fish when I was fly fishing off the side of a bridge directly into the ocean.  The 2x tippet didn't work out at all down there, everything that hit a fly on this tippet size would just break off.  I really wish i brought down some 20 and 30 pound flouro with me.  Def needed it.  I changed my tippet to 12 pound flouro which seemed to help get some fish to hand but would still snap.

Species of fish caught were mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper, spanish mackerels, and small barracudas. All the fish that were brought to hand were fairly small.  Anything larger seemed to snap the line.  Def had a huge problem with break offs. Next time I hit the ocean I will only use 20-30 pound flouro as a leader and tippet.  I lost a fairly large barracuda which would of made a great picture.

Unfortunately, my camera broke on this trip.  Not 100% sure what happened but the camera would keep turning itself off before any pictures would be taken.  So I wasn't able to get any cool pictures.

I hooked into at least 2 dozen of the fish in the picture below.  Leatherjacks.  They were very fast to hit pretty much any fly though. Hand hurt when the fin stabbed me, i had no idea they had venom in there dorsal fin!  Lesson learned.

  1. I got stuck by one of those guys last time I was down there too... Talk about painful. They're still fun to catch though!
